Angels Appearing to People

I have had a few experiences in life that made me think God sent an angel to help me or someone I love (one of which my wife caught on video and I share below).

I read Dallas Willard’s book on “Hearing God” and  learned more about angels and wanted to share.

First you should know, the simple definition of angel is “messenger”.

They are supernatural messengers sent by God and can take the form of a human, though they do not always reveal their identity.

You may have heard someone say “I had this crazy experience where this person knew more about me than I knew about myself and when I turned around they were gone”. That’s a pretty good indicator it was an angel.

But to be sure if it was an angel, you have to go to the Bible and see what God teaches on angels.

There are many accounts of angels appearing, which we can rely on being the truth.

So let’s explore some scriptures on angels. I marked the passage in read, and commented in black afterwards….


That evening the two angels came to the entrance of the city of Sodom. Lot was sitting there, and when he saw them, he stood up to meet them. Then he welcomed them and bowed with his face to the ground. “My lords,” he said, “come to my home to wash your feet, and be my guests for the night. You may then get up early in the morning and be on your way again.”

“Oh no,” they replied. “We’ll just spend the night out here in the city square.”

But Lot insisted, so at last they went home with him. Lot prepared a feast for them, complete with fresh bread made without yeast, and they ate. But before they retired for the night, all the men of Sodom, young and old, came from all over the city and surrounded the house.

Genesis 19:1-4

In this account, the angels took human form, and they were negotiable. They did not just come for a moment and disappear.


When Joshua was near the town of Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with sword in hand. Joshua went up to him and demanded, “Are you friend or foe?”

“Neither one,” he replied. “I am the commander of the Lord’s army.”

At this, Joshua fell with his face to the ground in reverence. “I am at your command,” Joshua said. “What do you want your servant to do?”

The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did as he was told.

We know it’s an angel because he is the commander of the “Lord’s army”… not an earthly regime.

Joshua 13: 13-15

Joshua knew it was an angel, and seemed to humble himself in that moment because God sent a helper. This angel took human form and had supernatural wisdom to defeat the enemy.


But God was angry that Balaam was going, so he sent the angel of the Lord to stand in the road to block his way. As Balaam and two servants were riding along, Balaam’s donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand. The donkey bolted off the road into a field, but Balaam beat it and turned it back onto the road. Then the angel of the Lord stood at a place where the road narrowed between two vineyard walls. When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it tried to squeeze by and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall. So Balaam beat the donkey again. Then the angel of the Lord moved farther down the road and stood in a place too narrow for the donkey to get by at all. This time when the donkey saw the angel, it lay down under Balaam. In a fit of rage Balaam beat the animal again with his staff.

Then the Lord gave the donkey the ability to speak. “What have I done to you that deserves your beating me three times?” it asked Balaam.

“You have made me look like a fool!” Balaam shouted. “If I had a sword with me, I would kill you!”

“But I am the same donkey you have ridden all your life,” the donkey answered. “Have I ever done anything like this before?”

“No,” Balaam admitted.

Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the roadway with a drawn sword in his hand. Balaam bowed his head and fell face down on the ground before him.

“Why did you beat your donkey those three times?” the angel of the Lord demanded. “Look, I have come to block your way because you are stubbornly resisting me. Three times the donkey saw me and shied away; otherwise, I would certainly have killed you by now and spared the donkey.”

Then Balaam confessed to the angel of the Lord, “I have sinned. I didn’t realize you were standing in the road to block my way. I will return home if you are against my going.”

But the angel of the Lord told Balaam, “Go with these men, but say only what I tell you to say.” So Balaam went on with Balak’s officials.

Numbers 22:22-35

In this case, God used an angel to re-direct something bad from happening.


Then the angel of the Lord came and sat beneath the great tree at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash of the clan of Abiezer. Gideon son of Joash was threshing wheat at the bottom of a winepress to hide the grain from the Midianites. The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, “Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!”

“Sir,” Gideon replied, “if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all the miracles our ancestors told us about? Didn’t they say, ‘The Lord brought us up out of Egypt’? But now the Lord has abandoned us and handed us over to the Midianites.”

Then the Lord turned to him and said, “Go with the strength you have, and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!”

“But Lord,” Gideon replied, “how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in the whole tribe of Manasseh, and I am the least in my entire family!”

The Lord said to him, “I will be with you. And you will destroy the Midianites as if you were fighting against one man.”

Gideon replied, “If you are truly going to help me, show me a sign to prove that it is really the Lord speaking to me. 18 Don’t go away until I come back and bring my offering to you.”

He answered, “I will stay here until you return.”

Gideon hurried home. He cooked a young goat, and with a basket[a] of flour he baked some bread without yeast. Then, carrying the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot, he brought them out and presented them to the angel, who was under the great tree.

The angel of God said to him, “Place the meat and the unleavened bread on this rock, and pour the broth over it.” And Gideon did as he was told. 21 Then the angel of the Lord touched the meat and bread with the tip of the staff in his hand, and fire flamed up from the rock and consumed all he had brought. And the angel of the Lord disappeared.

When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the Lord, he cried out, “Oh, Sovereign Lord, I’m doomed! I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!”

“It is all right,” the Lord replied. “Do not be afraid. You will not die.” And Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and named it Yahweh-Shalom (which means “the Lord is peace”). The altar remains in Ophrah in the land of the clan of Abiezer to this day.

Judges 6:11-24

Here God used an angel to share a message… that everything is OK and the plan is still on track.


I went on praying and confessing my sin and the sin of my people, pleading with the Lord my God for Jerusalem, his holy mountain. As I was praying, Gabriel, whom I had seen in the earlier vision, came swiftly to me at the time of the evening sacrifice. He explained to me, “Daniel, I have come here to give you insight and understanding. The moment you began praying, a command was given. And now I am here to tell you what it was, for you are very precious to God. Listen carefully so that you can understand the meaning of your vision.

Daniel 9: 20-23

God sent his angel Gabriel to deliver a message of wisdom.


As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet:

“Look! The virgin will conceive a child!

She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel,which means ‘God is with us.’”

When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.

Matthew 1:20-25

God sent an angel to give a message to Joseph to comfort him and give him confidence.


The women at the empty tomb

Suddenly there was a great earthquake! For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled aside the stone, and sat on it. His face shone like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow. The guards shook with fear when they saw him, and they fell into a dead faint.

Then the angel spoke to the women. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. Come, see where his body was lying. And now, go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and he is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Remember what I have told you.”

Matthew 28:2-7

This is a clear account of KNOWING that you are talking to an angel. There is no room for discernment. Anyone in this situation would KNOW that this is an angel.

And that seems to be a consistent theme with angels…. each person had such a clear direction from the angel, that they knew who it was… an angel sent by God.

While I can’t know your situation and only you really know/think it was an angel, you would most likely feel confident to the point of KNOWING that you experienced an angel.

The only time this happened to me was indirect… but I knew it was angels….

My foster daughter was in her bedroom folding her clothes after a nasty breakdown. My wife was on the phone with a counselor asking what to do about her extreme behavior. The counselor helped my wife in settling my daughter down. A little while later, my daughter was at peace, singing to some Christian music. My wife pulled out her iPhone and snuck a video in to send to the counselor to show her what a difference her words of wisdom made. Guess what was in the video? Orbs. After doing a little more research we found that Orbs sometimes appear in videos in Christian worship settings. And we found that Orbs are celestial beings…. perhaps a little remnant of an angel. In other words, we saw the eyes or the heart or the mind or some part of an angel. And there were many of them. Some of them were pure white with some transparency, very bright, with a 3-D effect… and maybe a little bit of purple or some other color. It shows up very clearly and sharply in my wife’s iphone. The Bible is our source of truth. Nothing is more reliable to us humans. When you read these words from scripture you can depend on them. You can trust them.

Though meeting or hearing from an angel may not be as critical to discern as other things, it is very important. Because if God gives you a message, sends you an angel, and you don’t do that thing, your life would be very different.

God has a purpose for each of us and reading the words from scripture should be the first place we start when we have a question. The bible contains more wisdom than the smartest person on earth. It takes a little more patience but the benefits far outweigh the cost.

You can either go through this life with trial, error, and frustration… which may appear to be a faster, easier solution at first glance. Or you can go through life with God as your mentor and have peace and joy.
